Title : Voice Of The Oppressed And The Representation In Graphic Vs Textual Narratives
Author : Ruchi Gupta
Abstract :
Literature has been in use for a very long time for the purpose of addressing the social issues prevailing in the society. Numerous writers have raised their voices through their writings using different genres. Biographies and autobiographies emerged as effective forms of expression. The present study seeks to examine two different modes of narration- graphic and textual narratives; which are used to mirror the life and struggles of the real-life protagonists who have faced social oppression. The primary texts used in this paper are based on the caste discrimination faced by the Dalit communities in India. This study aims to examine two life writings of- Bama in her textual autobiography Karukku, and that of B.R Ambedkar in the graphic biography Bhimayana: Experiences of Untouchability. This research performs a comparative analysis of both the texts as graphic vs textual narratives, that use different modes to represent the caste discrimination in the Indian society.
